Katori Hall's "The Hot Wing King," currently sizzling on stage at San Diego's Cygnet Theatre, (4040 Twiggs Street)  is a potent blend of humor, heart, and the complexities of chosen family. Set against the backdrop of Memphis's annual "Hot Wing Festival," the play dives deep into the lives of Cordell, a charismatic and meticulous cook, and his chosen family, "The New Wing Order."

Cordell, obsessed with achieving culinary perfection, is determined to win the festival with his signature wings. His meticulously crafted recipe, however, is only one ingredient in the play's rich stew. The real meat of the story lies in the dynamics of Cordell's found family, a group of Black gay men who navigate the joys and challenges of their relationships. Their camaraderie, playful banter, and unwavering support for one another create a vibrant and compelling portrait of community.

Cygnet Theatre's production brings Hall's vibrant characters to life with authenticity and energy. The intimate setting of the theatre amplifies the play's emotional impact, allowing the audience to fully immerse themselves in the characters' world. "The Hot Wing King" is more than just a play about a cooking competition; it's a celebration of resilience, love, and the power of chosen family to provide solace and strength in the face of adversity.
